I'm looking at using MyMovies Windows Home Server Edition (My Movies - Home)
Which your software can use as a data provider according to their site.

My question is would your software being streaming the video or what?
I'm making a vpn connection to my machine at home over the internet from my laptop.
So now I'm as good as plugged into my router, all ports available, except I'm in a low bandwith enviroment.

Could I launch media portal, pick a movie and let it stream to me in the background while I'm watching.
Like YouTube would for example? Or is that just beyond what's it's designed to do?

Thanks,

Kenny

MediaPortal isn't designed to do this. Live and time shifted TV is streamed over an RTSP connection, but there is not re-encoding, it just streams in whatever format it was captured/recorded in.

things like MyMovies are handled by the client as opposed to the server, so they would be pulled directly off a network share or something similar.

Remote streaming, also known as place-shifting is something that might be possible in MediaPortal 2, but that is a long way off at the moment
