as per usual it looks like copy protection is preventing me from using a disk for legitimate purposes. Someone here got the transformers move DVD for Christmas but, as far as I can tell, due to the copy protection Media portal (and all other software) can not play it. anybody know a way around this? I mean to make the PC play this disk, if necessary I will try to copy it to a proper DVD but I would rater play to original (and I wouldn't expect to get much help here on copying breaking copy protection). this is a genuine DVD and all I want to do is play it. I haven't found Sony written on it anywhere but it sounds just like what they would do. I don't think I want anything illegal, or am I no-longer permitted to watch DVD that I buy?

this is a standard DVD, not HDDVD or blueray.

you can also try DVD43, which does almost the same but is a free alternative.

Do other DVD's play ok? with some copy protection, the free codecs can't play it, but the commercial ones can (PowerDVD or Nvidia codecs for example)

Other DVDs play fine, I have never had one not pay at all (this one just shows a black screen and won't play on another PC via mediaplayer either). I have used several DVDs some bought some hired.

I am about to look at DVD43 now, it looks like it might help.

OK, I have tried it now. It work perfectly, just what I needed, and without needing to copy the disk. that is the perfect solution by the looks of it, easy and doesn't get in the way.

glad it worked well for you :)
I can imagine the trouble you'd be in if your child couldn't watch their new DVD at Christmas (I'm assuming child).
