Vista Basic and Business comes without DVD playback, but it can be added with 3rd party installations such as Purevideo and PowerDVD. Will installing MediaPortal add this functionality aswell? I know that MP comes with a MPEG-2 decoder, but so does Arcsoft TMT, and the last time I tried I was not able to play DVDs untill I installed PowerDVD.

The only 2 working DVD navigators are M$ and cyberlink PDVD7, so either of these is needed for things to work correctly.
And as you have not got the M$ one, it really only leaves PowerDVD, unless you configure as external player of course, then you can use what you like, but it takes things outside mediaportal.

Ok, thank you I'll grab the PowerDVD one then. Do you know if PowerDVD SE DVD Decoder
contains the navigator? Or do I need to get the complete program?
It does say "Complete DVD menu navigation" but want to be on the safe side.

Got so used to finding free cd's supplied with PDVD7 on, never gave any thought to how to get a copy if you do not have one, and cannot find any legal link 
The above link is for mce only i think, but it would put the PDVD8 editions in, which is not what you want, must be version 7 for navigation to be selectable, and to work correctly.

I don't think it's MCE only, I fould the link here so should be Vista aswell
Roxio also seems to have a similar package.
The reason why I don't really want to install full PowerDVD is that I'm using Arcsoft TMT for BR-playback, and want to install as few programs as possible, and I don't really like the anti-HTPCuser direction that Cyberlink has taken with PowerDVD so don't really want to support them too much
But I'll just do some testing and see if I can find som "trials" around on some sites that shouldn't be mentioned here
