DVR-MS files vs .TS Files (1 Viewer)

I have recently installed Media Portal and was under the impression from the FAQ's that it would record TV and create files of type dvr-ms.

But, my system appears to be creating .ts files.

Can anyone explain why?
and
What is the difference between dvr-ms and .ts files.

Cheers & Thanks
Graeme

.ts files are the raw mpeg transport stream which can directly be used by many encoding apps.
It's main advantage is support for h.264 (used for HDTV or DVB-T in many countries), support for multiple audio streams (e.g. Dolby Digital + 2 different languages), subtitles, etc.

    Cheers RTV.

I used to use MCE (which created dvr-ms files) to record NZ Horse races. I would then compress them (convert to wmv) to keep an archive of NZ Horse races.
When using MP, I have looked at the 'Compress' option within MYTV/Recorded TV/Compress but it only appears to allow dvr-ms files to be compressed.

How do I compress .ts files (to create wmv files)?
    Or
How do I get MP to create dvr-ms files rather than .ts files?

    Regards
    Graeme

Do not use TVServer then, uninstall and use MP's internal TVEngine for dvr-ms recordings.

Better still if you wish to convert, keep TVServer then use MCEBuddy to change to wmv or to h.264.

search MCEBuddy to get my settings.

    Hi,

Just to make sure I understand this....

I thought I had installed MediaPortal.
Are you saying what I actually installed was Media Portal and something called 'TVServer'?

Assuming that is correct, and I can uninstall TVServer (via control panel?) and then run Media Portal, it will still display the TV channels, its just it will now do so using its internal code, rather than the TVServer code, and doing this will create dvr-ms files rather than .ts files when recording.

I wonder if this will solve my other problem with no picture for the analogue tuner channels? (subject of another post).

    Back to this post....
So, given that there are 2 ways of setting Media Portal up, what are the benefits of using TVServer vs not using TVServer?

    Regards
    Graeme

Cheers, and thanks for the help.
The documentation explained heaps.... I now understand (mostly) how it all works.

Have re-installed everything (MP & TV Server), and what do ya know, its all working (DVB-T & Analogue channels).
    Thannks again for your help
    Regards
    Graeme
