I have a problem with playing x264-files. I have a AMD 4670-card and with files that can be accelerated the codec from cyberlink powerdvd8 works perfect. But with files that can't be accelerated the pictures goes black and there is usually no sound. If I turn of dxva then it works fine or if I use coreavc-codec.

Of course, what I would like is to use a codec which can accelerate the files that can be accelerated and doesn't crash when the file can't be accelerated. I have tried the codec from MPC but that didn't help. Anyone who have had this trouble or have an idea how to solve it?

Ok, now I have tried that with no improvement. I have also tried to install Vista instead and there the result is that I get a BSOD if I use epg as renderer and if I use wm9 the file won't play at all. This is if I have dxva checked and try to play a file which can't be accelerated. CoreAVC works though so I can switch to that for playing those files but it is not a very practical solution to switch codecs depending on the file.

My question is therefore: Has anyone managed to use the same codec to play both files that can be accelerated (with acceleration) and those files that can't? Is this even possible?

I'm grateful for any help in this matter.

    Raador,

Try using the stand-alone MPC-HC video decoder. You can register the MPCVideoDec.ax file in Windows and have it as a selectable option for MediaPortal's player. The way I configure the plugin is to add it as a post processing filter and adjust its properties from there, then take it back off (the settings are saved). A few things that you will have problems with though - embedded subtitles, and blocky video on some files that are not at idc profile 4.1. You can get the decoder here: XvidVideo.RU - Media Player Classic HomeCinema (x86), svn 845

Now I have tried the Avivo codec with BSOD as result and now Mediaportal won't start, it only complains about an error in a xml-file. So, that didn't work out.

I don't really understand this. I have the codec registered but what do you mean with using i as a post processing filter? What codec have you selected in the player section or do you mean that you just configured the codec in postprocessing? Also, I didn't see any useful settings when I configured the codec in post processing. How should it be configured? Now it crashes when playing files which doesn't support dxva.

Still, have you guys the functionality that I want, i.e. a codec which accelerates and can play unaccelarated files without any reconfiguration or is this a lost cause? I'm trying to figure it if it is my hardware/software that has a problem or if it is known bugs.

Thanks for the help so far, it's really appreciated.

Do you have any logs for that?

Raador can you say what version of Catalyst driver you are using (open ATI Catalyst Control Center> go to Information Center>Graphics Software >Catalyst version)? I have similar trouble with hardware acceleration turned on in MP except the screen goes blank for all my videos not just the non accelerable ones. Using without DXVA turned on the Cyberlink codecs work fine.

Can you say what videos you have hardware acceleration working for? I did some tests myself with PowerDVD 8 and 7.3 standalone players and it appears, at least under XP SP3 and using 8.10 Catalyst, that PowerDVD 8 will not accelerate progressive h.264, it will only do it for 1080i. PowerDVD 7.3 accelerates both 1080p and 1080i h.264, but neither 8 or 7.3 will accelerate a VC1 1080p Dark Knight trailer which will work with acceleration in MPC-HC.

Now my computer has gone a bit strange on me. After the crash mediaportal won't start even after an unistallation and reinstall. This is what the log says:

I'm a bit stumped actually, i gave done some searches in the forum but haven't found a solution, just one person who seems to have had some luck with reinstalling, but that doesn't work for me.

EDIT: Ok, now I at least got Mediaportal running again, but the problem with the codec remain. I think I will wait a bit and see if someone solves the problem. hopefully this is a problem which will be solved soon. =)

I use 8.10 also, and in mediaportal acceleration have worked fine both with the PowerDVD8 codec and MPC codec. The files I have tried has been in 1080p format.

Can you say what filetype you are testing (i.e. .mov, .wmv, .mkv) and what CPU usage you get with acceleration?
