Easiest Remote (1 Viewer)

Hello again guys,

Im getting very tired with spending hour after hour trying to get my crappy MCE clone remote working perfectly with MP.
Since my time is precious i'd rather just buy a remote that works straight out the box with MP. So...

Im looking for a remote that is:
Easy to setup
Easy to configure if i want special buttons to do different things (e.g. videos takes me to moving pictures, aspect ratio etc)
Power button to sleep PC
Power button to turn my TV off (Samsung 7 series LED)


If i have to invest some coin here im willing to... genuine MCE remote, hauppage, logitech harmony whatever i just want an easy life

Any ideas?
P.s. im in australia now so if there are any ozzys with links feel free

To be honest I don't think buying a new remote is necessarily the complete solution because some of the things you want to do (like "videos takes me to moving pictures") are not possible without plugins anyway. The thing that you mentioned that does make it necessary to buy a new remote (at least in my opinion) is your desire to control your TV with it. I'm not able to make recommendations in that department but on the software side I'd recommend the Shortcut'er plugin for enabling you to use buttons to jump to specific sections in MP, and possibly EventGhost for anything your new remote can't do.

Thanks for the response mm but since my current remote fails with even basic functions I do think a new device is the answer (or at least help). I fully understand I'll still need plugins to get my advanced customisations working but that's ok as long as all the basic functions work in the first place, I can work on them in time. Given the requirements in my original post is there any remote(s) you can suggest that can do all these easier than others?

I use a genuine Microsoft MCE remote to put the pc to sleep and turn off the tv since it is capable of learning and program certain buttons, but not sure about the shortcut for movingpictures I have never messed with that since I really dont see the need for it, 1 click of the green button gets you back to the home page and then 1 click of the ok and your in movingpictures. You can get the real ones on ebay still with the receiver.

I have the remote linked below. All buttons work properly with the exception of the four colored ones and whatever the button is below them. It will not control your TV though. I also have Harmony remotes which is why I linked to the Mediagate remote. If you pick up a Harmony select the AnywareGP-IR02BK as a device. It uses the same Mediagate remote and the buttons on the Harmony will be properly mapped and you will also be able to control your TV and other devices.

I see there is a lot of "genuine" MCE remotes all over the place but how do you know if it is genuine or not? does it matter?

I have not idea whether this is actually genuine or not and dont want to be caught out with a fake that has reduced functionality.

Also do only certain brands of MCE remote allow for learning and programming certain buttons i.e. the TV power button?

Thanks paranoid, just a couple of questions regarding this:
1. is there any particular harmony i should be looking at? do they give different levels of functionality in MP?
2. does the harmony not come with a receiver? why bother getting the seperate?
3. as i live in australia and the chap in the link is in europe it will probably be more convenient for me to buy the receiver local, per my last post is there such thing as a genuine RC6 receiver? I dont want to be caught out buying fake rubbish only to find out im back in the mess i am now with my current MCE clone remote (struggling to say the least).

One of them has 4 colored buttons on the bottom of the remote, and the other remote does not have the 4 extra buttons.
Which one is better in your opinion ?
Are the colored buttons just extra buttons that can be programed to do additional functions ?

They are both supported
MCE Remote - MediaPortal Wiki

And if the keys don't do anything already then yes you can use something like IR Server Suite (IRSS) to program them do do something.

They are telextext buttons unique to Europe\Asia\Autralia, but really useful. they are links to toggle fullscreen playback = Red, toggle next audio = green,, Change aspect ratio = Red, subtitle on\off = yellow, but mine is linked to sleeptimer so if watching a movie and want pc to go to sleep afterwards it does this at the end of playback

So the extra buttons really come in handy
