Hi all,

what is the easiest way to generate a DVD from an mpeg?

I am having an mpg that is smaller than 4.7 gb or larger (for double layer) and I simply want to cretae the DVD directory structure. (the VIDEO_TS and so on).

Nero, PowerProducer, Studio and all of the other programs are taking hours to do a lot of work that I don't need.

As far as I know the vob's contain nothing but mpg. So no recoding should be necessary.

So I am looking for a simple program (simple means EASY TO USE) that takes the mpg, generates the vob's and creates the directory. not more and not less.

Any idea?

thanks+regards

    Hi WeWe,

I am on the same search. :)

Currently I use the Trial of TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6. This is really a straight forward thing, as you wished. Take the MPEG, cut it if you want (GOP based, so its fast), make a simple Menu and let it create the VIDEO_TS / AUDIO_TS directories. Burn it, if you want to. This way you can get a DVD within minutes. Version 2.0 is out now, I haven't tested it, yet. Seems as if it has a fast frame based cutting now.

Best thing I did find so far. You may give it a try. :)

    Hi Flip,

I will give it a try.

So far I was rather happy with PowerProducer. It is strightforward. But what I don't understand: in some cases it recodes the mpg. WHY??? Even when I only want to produce the directories without burning, it does so - taking a long long time.

I am having a double layer buner, so I can burn even the longest film on a DVD.

And also I think that recoding costs quality. So why the hell ....

Ok, maybe your tip solves my time and nerves. I will report ...

    thanks+regards

By no means I am an expert on this.

But there are different formats of mpegs, some lie within the specification of the DVD-format and some not.

Maybe this is the reason that some mpegs are recoded. As long as you use a htpc to play them, this wouldn´t matter probably. No idea how tolerant DVD-players are.

    Hi,

I think TomTom is right with the MPEG format. I did have a recording with a bitrate above DVD specs ( > 9.8 Mbps). DVD Author warns you then, but you can build the DVD anyway. I haven't tested this DVD on a standalone player, yet. But it works flawless on a PC. :)

I am testing DVD Autjor now: man, that really is what I have been looking for. Straightforward, the cutting section is perfect (with the single frame preview pictures) and it does no extra stuff that I wouldn't expect.

Absolutely ideal for my purposes (I simply want to burn recorded films).

    thanks for that tip!

wewe - Does DVD Author ver. 2 allow for command line switches so can create from commandline -or- MUST it be through the GUI?

    mike:

well, I am testing 1.6. There seems to be no command line.

The website says about 2.0 that it comes out TODAY (funny heh?)

But also no hint regarding command line. So probably not ...

Give me a few more weeks and the MyBurner plugin will burn DVD's for you. I currently have it burning single mpeg DVD's and am working on multiple mpeg's and DVD menus :)
