Can anyone confirm if this works - I have tried but still am not convinced one way or the other

I want the xmltv plugin to read in and populate my EPG (as th xml file has around 14 days of programming).
    This is working fine.

I have now also turned on the built-in EPG grabber that gets the now and next over the air.

I have set this to try and update existing programs.

Will both work together nicely? i.e. any gaps that arent in the xml file (as sometimes I have a few "To be announced" or last minute changes) - wil these gaps or changes be updated by the over-the-air grabber?

    hope that was clear!!

    ------------- AUTOMERGE ---------------------

Typical! Right after I posted this I saw the EPG update!

Awesome - so now I have the best of both - an xmltv file for future programs, and the over the air epg for any last minute changes

I'm trying the same thing, mainly to get rid of empty spaces in the epg when displayed, seeing how For The Record deals with this, only just set this up, so needs a bit of testing :)

Seems to work here quite well.

So the xml file from the radio times populates my EPG each night at 3am, then the OTA EPG grabber runs every 4 hours and grabs however many hours/days in advance.

So far it looks really good - i checked the "try and update programs" checkbox - so it has updated some poor radiotimes xml data with more detailed info
e.g. "Rugby Union" from radiotimes, became a more descriptive "Rugby Union: Wales vs South Africa"

Also BBC Four and BBC Three now have "This is BBC THREE" in the guide, instead of simply "no data available" for when there are no set programs.

I guess if the over the air syncing works then it will always overwrite the radiotimes xml, and if it fails, i can fall back on the radiotimes data.

if it all goes horribly wrong i'll update this thread!

Just used the xmltv plugin last night and it erased all the OTA epg data to start with (normal I suppose?). Like you mentioned there are a few empty spaces from the radiotimes.xml which I am now assuming will be filled in by the OTA EPG

wrt "...try and update programs..." checkbox, where is this as I seem to have missed this.

On the whole xmltv thing, I follwed a guide in the xmltv sticky and set up the xmltv gui grabber to get the tvguide.xml; however ppl are also using the webEPG - is this any better/easier to use.

Personally I find xmltv really easy to use once setup. I have made my channels list, and then made a scheduled task that runs xmltv, and copies over the xml file to the correct directory.
The TV Server then picks it up, and imports it (around 3am), and then the OTA grabber then updates the channels.

Seems to work well. What I find is that what im seeing/using is the OTA info, and the xmltv is just a backup (as OTA will keep overwriting it).

The only thing I dont like is that the OTA is too good! What I mean is - RadioTimes XML just has "Film ______ 21:00 to 23:00", however the OTA epg will have "Film _____ 21:00 - 21:55" "News 21:55 - 22:00" "Film ______ 22:00 - 23:00".
So to record a film i nee to do it in two parts, as the news in between splits up the program. Whereas with radiotimes xml it ignored the news, so i could record it as one file. ah well!

Why copy the xmltv file over?; I've set the grabber to create the xml file in the xmltv folder under mediaportal sub-dir.

As for grabbing I've only got it to run once a week v.late on a Sunday, suppose changing it won't harm.

Copying the file is left over from using older versions of xmltv and a bad internet connection. the xml file used to be corrupt quite often, so i had a script that would download the xmltv file, validate the xml, and if valid - copy the file. If not valid, it would try and download again.

Since updating xmltv the new version is a lot better, and doesnt need validation, so I guess I could download it directly.
