FAQ on ffdshow, codecs, splitters in MP? (1 Viewer)

I'm confused as to what role ffdshow plays in MP. In ffdshow's codec settings I can nominate the video decoder for given formats, eg:

h264, x264, xvid -> libavcodec
mpeg2 -> libmeg2

Are these used or ignored by MP in its codec configuration of Movie Player and DVD Codec?

I see that in my MP that ffdshow appears as a codec in the Audio dropdown list, but not in the Video. Anyone know why?

Is there an FAQ on this stuff, including splitters? I could help write one if need be.

    it depends :)

    if no other H264 and/or Mpeg2 codecs are on your system, FFDshow wil use it's own.

    if there are other H264 and/or Mpeg2 codecs on your system, it depends on the merrit of each codec which codec MP uses

    Disabling H264 and or Mpeg2 in FFDSHOW makes windows use the othercodecs without changing its merrit

    (DONT CHANGE MERRITS UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING)

    So, to recap:

    install FFDshow and check if all formats play ok

    if any formats dont play, install a aditional codec and disable it in FFDshow

    Very good, thanks for that. And now onto MediaPortal, if I may :cool:

    If I'm playing back an mpeg2 file (TV recording) in MP, what codec is used:

    1. The one in MP's Movie Player's "Video Codec"
    2. The one in MPs DVD "Video Codec"
    3. The one in ffdshow's mpeg2 setting (taking into account your points about ffdshow) ?
    And finally, what if I'm playing back an X264 file in MP..which one then? I'm assuming it's not 2.

    Thanks again

    to see what codecs MP uses: open MP in windowed mode and start graphedit to see which codecs are used.

    For me I have FFDshow installed and PowerDVD for my DVD's and Mpeg2's
    for x264 I would either go for ffdshow with x264 support or download CORE x264
