If you don't like assembling your own HTPC then this baby might be the answer:

New Acer(R) Aspire X1200 Desktop is a Small Yet Mighty Package

With the NVIDIA® GeForce® 8200 On-Board Graphics, AMD x2 4850e, 4GB of memory and a "nice" looking SFF case this sure is an easy alternative. I'm not trying to sound like a commercial or anything but i noticed how most current HTPC are similar specced so i thought i should mention this ;) (If i were Acer i would have used the AMD 780G though) This pre-built is also not very expensive (~$449.49) so that's another plus.

Saw this a couple of days ago. Their last models where a big success here in Norway (great price and rather quiet), but being based on a 690G-chipsett made it MP-unfriendly.

The "problem" with these are fitting new PCI-hardware, as they do not use full height nor standard size.

yeah best to use as-is.. if you plan on extra hardware then a custom built would be the better choice. But this would make a fine bedroom "extender" if you ask me :)

    I agree.

However, there are two things that surprises me:
    1. The former model was based on 690G, and was a huge success. Why did they not choose a 780G based mobo? See: Nvidia's GeForce 8300 chipset - The Tech Report - Page 13
    2. When first choosing a nVidia IGP, why not 8300? (Only difference is higher corespeed I think , so does not matter for HTPC usage - actually 8200 might be better due to lower power consumption)
