As you probably know, in Italy the only satellite-tv provider is SKY.
I don't know if it's the same abroad, but here sky broadcast in NDS (Videoguard) system. I just read an article saying that this format was built up in order to ban the possibility of digital recording.
As I thought I would buy the tv card in object (Firedtv), I was wandering if (together with a cam and a regular subscription) it is possible to receive the SKY signal and record it as dvr-ms.

    Thank you for answers!

    NDS

I have a Dragon CAM running Predator and a FireDTV-s Floppy.... I can decode Sky UK no problem, but have to put the card back in the orginal sky box from time to time as it needs an update signal, the predator can't do that yet..

Sky Italia NDS was compromised (i think) some time ago.. if I where you I'd check some of the sat forums like satellites.co.uk lots of hepful people there ;-).

Personally... best bet would be a Dragon CAM or a dreambox running newcamd (embedded NDS emulator which does handle the update messages ok) and of course a proper sub card..

Word to the wise though: Sky can change the NDS keys whenever they like and even change parts of the alogorythmn rendering these emulators useless.. it's a bit of a cat and mouse game, but so far these emulators have works for the best part of a year.. be prepared to part with some cash and time to keep up....

Mmmh, so maybe it's better to have a regular decoder from sky, quality could be worse (digital->analog->digital and no ac3 audio) but less time to lose...

    Thank you for the reply!

p.s. anyway, next year sky bouquet will be probably broadcasted in internet and new possibilities would come. As sky is the monopolist in satellite broadcasting has to let telecom provider to sell channel packages of its content.
