Hello folks!

-First of all, we, me and my family, have been using mp1 without any kind of hassle several years now. Perhaps I'm one of the most happy users out there. This is why we make an annual donation to the media-portal developers team. You all make a tremendous job, so thank you, all of you.

Anyway, our TV server is having a fresh W10 install. While doing this I started to think if one should migrate from mp1 to mp2? The problem is that I know absolutely nothing about mp2. I'm also extremely happy with mp1. Am I being stupid to even consider a migration? Can one expect mp2 to run as flawless as mp1? What benefits with mp2 makes it worth the hassle with a migration?

Pardon for the 'Swenglish'. English is trickier than one might think!

    Hi.
You know... Never change a running system.... If you don't miss anything on MP1 it probably can be better to not upgrade to MP2 now. But the future definitely belongs to MP2.

Some advantages MP2 has over MP1. MP2 is completely usable out of the box. You don't need to install community plugins (TVSeries, Fanart Handler,...) or 3rd party software like a SQL Server to get at least the minimal basic functions of a HTPC software.. You have a real Client - Server Environment where you only need to import your media once to have it available for all clients. Same is for watched status and so on... The configuration is completely different to MP1 so it may be not that common on first try. Overall it is easier a lot.
MP2 provides PictureInPicture features for any type of media, not even on TV. And the GUI is usable with remote, mouse/keyboard and even with Touchscreen. Aside this MP2 is much faster. Especially on start up (average start time of the client is less than 1 second) and the GUI feels much more fluid in general. I'm using MP2 only since beginning of this year and here it is working more stable than MP1 ever did.

The disadvantages MP2 has are mainly in missing features that may be added sooner or later or probably never. MP1 is more configurable for experienced users. This may never be changing as MP2 should be working as easy as possible. MP1 is for Geeks only, MP2 can probably be for "not that geekish" people too... And the structure is very different to MP1 so if you are familiar with MP1 it may be difficult to get used to it that fast.

You can run both programs together on the same system. So I should say, give it a go try!

I too aggree with marcel. And add my 2 cents:

MP2 still has some glitches. I wasn't able to make my remote work with it because it simply doesn't have keyboard bindings. You need a compatible remote to be able to operate it remotely (or program something yourself through various plugins -IRSS or some such). For me the second most missed feature was MPDisplay plugin for my HTPC screen.
I found the usability aspect of MP2 vastly superior to MP1, but there are some bugs to be ironed out and there's lots of settings missing from MP1. Chances are you will run into just that one setting that was extremely important to you, but it isn't implemented yet in MP2.

All in all, I had to revert back to MP1, mostly due to remote issues, but now I'm super hyped for all the features MP2 showed me. You should definitely give MP2 a try. Then you will see if it's also ready for production for your particular use case.
