Full Screen loses picture (1 Viewer)

I installed MediaPortal yesterday and love the UI compared to my Hauppauge card software. The TV channels are operating OK and I can view them fully in the Windowed mode, but when I try to make it go full screen, it sort of half starts then the current screen at that time freezes but I can still hear the TV working. I can then not get anything back so I end up having to kill the MediaPortal in the Task Manager applications list.

I assume something in my video set-up is hindering this, but I don't know what. I have a reasonably decent graphics card, and AFIAK I have all the latest DirectX software etc installed.

Any thoughts about what could be going wrong here? How can I fix it?

Are you referring to changing MP from window-mode to fullscreen-mode? If so, it is a known problem that it does not work while video/TV is playing. Stop the video/tv and then change to full screen (ALT-ENTER) and then start the video/TV again.

Is this common to everyone's set up or to a few like me? Is there anything I can do to fix this on my PC and not have to use the workaround every time?

I am not sure, but from forum entries that I monitored long time ago, I got the impression that it is everyone. Maybe one of the DEVS/MODS can give us clarity.
