Getting Rid of Shares (1 Viewer)

Any chance that we'll be able to get rid of Shares some time soon?

I love MP, and not being able to view all my videos sorted on one screen is really the only drawback I see comparing it to MCE and the rest.

Plus, having something called "Objects" among one's albums or DVDs is not exactly elegant. It can be disconcerting to the casual user to suddenly find themselves in a tree containing drives and folders:)

Personally, I use the Shares view almost exclusively. I put different files into different folders for a reason, and don't want to scroll through a list containing hundreds of files when I can go to the correct folder.

    Just another point of view.

Same, I dont use anything but shares. Anything thats played comes exclusively from either the recorded tv section or off my main work PC.

You can see all your videos on one screen if you change your view from share to a database driven view like "titles". You "only" have to add all your videos to the DB.

ha, this is no minor thing... we should be able to add things to the database WITHOUT accessing the internet for EVERY file (there are hundrents of files we know no info will be found)

    Configure->Movies->Database
There you can find a nice editor to add/edit/delete movie entries...

what... manualy? we are talking about hundrends or thousands of files

why can't the import be used BUT WITH DISABLED on-line lookup?
    (same for MP3)

also I have notices I cannot delete on-line database handlers... only add (!?)

I understand why Shares is convenient for many, but it really, imo, is not a very elegant solution for a nicely polished front-end. When someone is clicking a remote, being faced with C:\, E:\ or F:\ could be a bit intimidating.

I am assuming that the reason why for some Shares is a requirement is because they organize their media in certain categories.

Wouldn't it be a more elegant solution to provide for additional items in the menu, which could be named, for example "Movies," "Videos," "TV Shows," etc.? Or even sub-menus, a la Vista (even though I am not a big fan of horizontal navigation.)

    Just my 2 cents....

The other users of our MP box are what I consider pretty computer illiterate and they have no problems going into the share called "TV Shows" and picking what they want to watch. Sure, the HDD/DVD drive is listed but they rarely ever use it. When they watch stuff Ive burnt onto DVD they know enough to put the disk in and then goto CD\DVD drive.

Its up to the users I suppose, whats more elegant for one is not as good for another. I suppose if I was storing hundreds of tv shows locally on the box it might be different but I dont see a need for that (everthing on my setup is remotely stored or on media).
