hi i've been using mediaportal for a few years now, until recently i've been happy with two pci nova-t cards but got fed up of signal breakup from lightswitches etc so i bought a pci nova-s card to go alongside the other cards this brought bbc hd and itv hd to the table but i dont get smooth playback (intel p4 3hgz 1g ddr ram and nvidia fx5200 card agp) i was wondering if i could just buy a new agp 8x graphics card which could use hardware accerleration for h.264 or whether i need to start again with the set-up and go for a pci-e grpahics card and dual-core system but i'm worried about not only the cost and the noise as software decoding still uses processor and therefore heat?

cheers

Hi. On one of my playback machines, I use an nvidia 7700 agp. With the arcsoft decoder, I can playback recodings from my hdpvr at about 70-80% cpu, with no stuttering. But the playback is on a 480i television. Might require more to feed hd tv? By way of comparison, other codecs that are not accelerated are completely unwatchable.

I would wait and update all, unless you get a cheapie from car boot or ebay.

Dual core is a must in these multimedia times, i'm often running MP and converting ts recordings to h.264 at the same time.

Ba aware that some AGP cards does not have the same abilities as their PCIe-brothers. Can't remember which @ the moment :(
I kinda agree with PD; a new setup might be the best :sorry:

I agree about a new setup being preferred, btw. THe newer video cards are just better at decoding h264. But, if the cost of a new system makes it impossible, a 7700 agp for 50-60 bucks might be a short-term solution until a completely new rig can be afforded.
