Why don't you just use the iPlayer and call it done?

You could buy a large quality antenna and install it indoors/garage/loft. You can probably pick one up a car-boot sale. At least you would ensure that you have a good RF cable and connectors. Ask the neighbours how is there TV signal to figure out if you are in a poor reception area. If so then you are pretty much out of options unless you want to go with a large antenna array. Amplification only gets you so far. Also your amplifier needs to be a good quality one. Poor ones introduce a lot of amplified noise. Good ones suppress noise.

From what I read you can split the mux channel group as they are all technically on the same channel.
The tuner receives the mux group on one physical channel. The software then de-muxes (splits) the 1 physical channel into the 5 or 6 or whatever virtual channels. These can all be watched concurrently using the same tuner. Clearly using 1 tuner you cannot watch channels from different mux groups because each mux group requires the tuner to process a different physical channel.

Thanks for the recommendation. I do have a signal booster & splitter. Without it, I can't get good picture on any freeview channel. With it, I have the situation described above. Part of the problem on my poor muxes may be the noise introduced by the signal amplification, but there's no way round that - without it I wouldn't be able to watch any channel.

I probably need the aerial cable and maybe the aerial replaced, but that's not an option (it's not my property). So I have to work with what I have.

A related question to my original one:

If someone is watching BBC1 on the HTPC, and someone else connects over the network and watches BBC2 on a different computer, does this use one tuner or two, since they are both on the same MUX?

Same mux, so same tuner.
