So I've just built a flash new mediaportal htpc for my bedroom. Here's the specs:

CPU: AMD Quad Core
Motherboard: GA-MA78GM-S2H (onboard hdmi and spec'd to 1080p with onboard ATI 3200HD)
2 Gigs ram 1066
1 terrabyte hard drive
Running vista home premium with SP1 in a single seat config with a HVR2200 dual hybrid tuner.
Codecs: ffdshow, coreavc, powerdvd 8 ultra.

The machine runs well, but I have turned off hardware decoding in MP and Powerdvd because I sometimes get green screens, which I assume is a problem with the decode. All runs fine without hardware decoding but I would of course like the benefits of lower cpu usage etc that come with h/w decode.

Are there specific things I can check? I'm fairly sure I'm running the latest codecs and drivers.

This is a problem with ATI cards it seems, especially that HD3200 which everyone seems to buy, a decision some regret after discovering the common problem.
However apparently the problem was fixed by the latest Catalyst 8.9 drivers. Make sure you're using EVR also. Can't remember much else about the issue.

other than the flickering TV guide, I dont have any trouble with the board.
I run a clean install (TinyVista) with only Cat 8.9, PDVD8, Mysql and Media portal installed (RC2). I'm happy now and just need to leave my system alone.

    Yes! Please tell!

    1) If it is not working, then
    2) Fix it
    3) Everything working, then
    4) tweak and tune it, untill
    5) back to 1 :D

(I actually am getting better at not doing 4.)

I'm installing RC3 on my test box. I am still running pre RC1 on my main HTPC. It slows down, it has issues but you know what? A quick reboot and it works, every time.

ATI Control Panel won't open, Hardware Acceleration doesn't work but none of that matters - bottom line it works and I don't touch it.

Once it works - even "mostly works" leave it alone. Its hard, but overtime you can just enjoy it vs constantly breaking it. Lastly, if you're tweaking and going to use system restore to restore to a working setup, know that system restore only keeps so many old versions and installing / uninstalling software can eat up many past restore points.

    Good luck.
