OK the first board i was looking at wouldn't do what i wanted at all.
so i redid it with a bigger chip. right now i have a joystick for up, down, left, right, and enter. the Ir-receiver, play, stop, pause fast froward, and rewind.the LCD will display two lines of data scrolling on the screen and the back light is dim-able by switch.
this is just a mock up and i need to get the parts together(and I'm poor so it might not be till after x-mas) but i hope to start working on the firmware code little by little.

so what I'm trying to end up with is.......

a small case with a micro atx form factor

full control of media portal from front panel

Ir receiver with universal remote

tie in to front panel buttons from mother board for power and led so chip knows whats going on and can shout down and restart PC.
plug in coded in mediportal to run it no out side code to install just one plug in

things to add
RF with 100 ft range
lighting control
temp sensors inside and out

media portal work up 2.jpg

here a newer mock up as you can see this one has a lot more pins to use and is nowhere near full.
