Seems that more work is needed for USB hardware (and/or drivers) to get reliable enough to use for the various power events important for HTPC use.
Iæm really not sure what the root cause of all this is. It could be the Windows USB stack, or it could be down to how USB has been implimented by those who designed the standard. I really don't know.

Do other OS's suffer from this kind of problem? <rhetorical question> :)

I think USB is being unjustly maligned here - it does have issues sometimes, but I have 5 USB devices on my HTPC - 2 x DVB-T tuners, IR receiver, wireless kb/mouse and Bluetooth dongle - and the only issue I've had is with one of the tuners not working after resume (fixed by disabling 'selective usb suspend' in Vista power settings).

Now, as for problems - sorting out sensible drivers for the Atheros-based WLAN PCI card is another story.....

If you are running a single-seat system, look at using the https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/newcomers-forum-240/msloopback-device-singleseat-users-51028/ for TV-server/MP - it will help isolate TV-server from external network connection problems.

I agree. I have a USB kb/mouse and sometimes attach a USB external drive without any issues.

Did you mean WLAN USB? I had a USB wireless adapter (Netgear WN111), and I think the drivers associated with it were conflicting with the TV card, even with the MS Loopback adapter installed and with 'selective USB suspend' disabled. After I replaced it with a PCI wireless adapter (Netgear WN311B) and removed the WN111 driver, everything worked well.

I have read in other posts that USB-based wireless adapters often cause issues. Not sure if this is hardware specific (Atheros?) or not...

No, it's a PCI card, but my experience with it (and the same card in an XP PC) means that I'd be very reluctant to consider an Atheros-based WLAN product again.

Fair enough. After a bit more digging, I found out that my USB adapter (WN111v1) uses a Marvell chipset, whereas the WN111v2 uses the Atheros chipset.

The PCI adapter that I now use (WN311B) uses a Broadcom chipset. My wifi router (WNR834B) also uses a Broadcom chipset. Perhaps it is more important to ensure the router and adapters use the same type of chipset? This shouldn't be the case, as the technology is supposed to be based on a standard

I have decided to hardwire and use the onboard ethernet to solve the driver issue. I bought the rangemax (Wp111) as my theatre room is some distance from the router but I still don't get great transfer speeds so i'll re-assign the range max to my office PC and get 100mbs on wired LAN. This should (hopefully) solve the Nova T issue, though I also have a wireless keyboard on USB so there's a possible conflict there also? Anyway, apart from this minor bugbear everything seems to work fine. (untill the wife gets hold of the keyboard  ) Still, no-one said it was gonna be easy... :)
