    Hi,

Since a week I have a new ADSL modem, A Fritzbox Fon WLAN 7170 Annex A. I just have placed it in the utilities cupboard and I am connected wireless, with 54Mbit/s at the moment. BUT I have bought a FritzBox stick on ebay today which is capable to run at 125Mbit/sec (802.11g++).. which is faster then a normal wired network..

I wonder if this should be sufficient to stream HD movies over the wireless network.. because in that case I am considering to hook up a NAS server with 1 or 2 TB to my modem to place all my movies(HD and DVD files), music and and pictures, so I can free some space to record TV programs on my HTPC harddisk.

But I wonder if Mediaportal can work this way with a somewhat remote harddisk.

Anybody here that allready has good experience with a combination of Fritzbox 7170 modem and NAS server?

The advantage of having a NAS server is that I can allso access my NAS harddisk remotely from every internet computer in the world, and I allso can have it set up as a bit torrent server. It must be a NAS server, because if it just a USB external harddisk, the filesize is limited to 2Gb by the Fritzbox, with NAS, running Samba or something, it doesnt matter because then it can be formatted as a NTFS harddisk.

    Thanks,

    Lots

From my experience with wireless, its pretty much dependant on what's between the router and your end device (HTPC in this case I guess). ie. Solid Walls/Timber frame etc.

I just bought some Powerline stuff in the end and it works great. (I live in a flat block and wireless seems to get a lot of interference). That's only around 100Mbit (its says 200, buts its 100 each way). Streams 720p/1080p ok for me.

For Music/DVD's etc you can run from shares fine in MP as far as I know. I haven't really tried with an NAS, but all my media is on my TV server in another room, with no local media on my HTPC and I have had no issues.

Lots, you can map your movies folder to your NAS server this way --> \\myserver\movies
Normally, 1080p will stream anywhere from 18Mbps to 25Mbps for both video and audio.
Turn on QoS if you have it in your network drivers and the Fritzbox. Otherwise, you may end up with stuttering video problems.

Thanks guys, I will give it a try, in worst case I just have a very expensive external harddrive

The Fritz has a pretty strong transmitter as I have the full 54 Mbit/s the max of my current USB stick in my HTPC .. it is just 15 feet away, but with two doors and a brick wall in between. The Fritz Stick is 125Mb/s capable, just like the Fritzbox. With my former Thomson modem, it never got the full 54 Mbit/sec.

My somewhat crappy 54 Mbit WLAN-router sometimes has hickups with even a simple SD-stream, so I'm looking forward to your experiences with Pre-N (g++).

    Just a little update

Till now I have not got it to work with HD streaming. Lots of stutters all the time, more like a slide show then a movie.

Qos is turned on at HTPC, cannot be set in the Fritzbox
WMM is enabled at both HTPC and Fritzbox
125Mbit/sec.. unclear if it is working, windows tells me its receiving at 54Mbit/sec, firtzlan monitor shows full throughput, but is allso at 54. 125Mbit/sec is enabled at both devices

I did some testing, but with normal downloading, the WLAN really performs with about 20-30Mbit/ec, but during trying to stream the HD video, it shows only 8Mbit/sec. So I wonder what slows it so down, not other activities on my network then the streaming of the HD video.

(when I wrote that thread I forgot about this old one)

I have given up to have the NAS on the wireless LAN.

I got a message from AVM that the 54G++ would not show in the monitor, but would send at 125Mbit if possible. Netto speed increase would have been 35% max AVM told me. I got it in direct sight with just a few meters in between, but did not see any performabce increase, so I think this 125Mbit/sec is still not enough for streaming HD video. Maybe next year my ISP will provide the Wireless N modems (300Mbit/sec), if so I will try again.

I have now connected the NAS directly to the HTPC, using the NIC and seems to work fine playing 1080P HD Video. By bridging the NIC with the WLAN adapter it still remains in my network, so I still can reach the NAS with my laptop. Disadvantage is that the HTPC must be turned on if I want to do things on the NAS with my laptop.

just wroted about bluray sharing from TV-server to this thread.

Since IO is not necessarily optimized for streaming heavy content from network shares there must be very responsive transmit-layer below. Even when compressed HD streams should fit fine on underlying bandwith the result with software optimized for local HD responces might screw things up. E.g the iSCSI shared bluray drive + PowerDVD solution - in above referred thread - seemed not able to play BD-content well with 100Mb FD LAN. 1Gb seemed enough if overall utilization stays below ~30%. My home LAN is not tested for 1Gb - so there might be some problems at that level - but It feels pointless to try good quality HD streaming with any wifi solutions.

Actually I have done some testing and 100Mb LAN seems to be enough when playing a blu-ray content (real disks). The key difference might be that Vista uses SMB2.0 protocol (which has improved performance), compared to XP (assuming that you were testing on XP).

Hi I have been using a NAS (Linksys NSLU2) connected to my router via a 100mb switch and with 54g wireless connection between the router and MP and all works fine with x264 files, and all SD files, one thing with WiFi to be wary of is that you can only use 3 of the available wireless frequency's, 1, 6 and 11 if memory serves, something to do with the way WiFi works and you must make sure that nobody else nearby is using the same or close frequency's to you or you will get interference on your chosen channel. I use channel 1 as this seems to be a channel that most people do not choose and seems to have less interference where I live.
