I had a second HDD crash in about a years time (WD extended test fails on 'too many bad sectors').

Both where external WD MyBook connected to my TV server and both where used for TV recording, but not for time shifting. Is recording and playing back TV hard on a HDD?

I know we have had a power outage yesterday and I was wondering if that could have caused the problem. I'm worried about the 4TB array that holds my film collection. Then again my other PCs and HDDs don't seem to be effected. Would it make sense to get myself a UPS? It would have to manage a shutdown, the outages can be long (Belgium is not as developed as you might think ;)). I was looking at an APC RS 800 VA anybody any experience or suggestions?

    Hi VdR,

It's definitely a good idea to get yourself a UPS to protect your equipment. Good UPSs not only give you run time but also filter power to ensure your equipment is protected and has regulated power all the time. The unit you've picked, the RS 800 is a nice unit but it's not really suitable for important computer equipment. It's an entry level unit designed for non essential equipment. If the equipment is important to you, I'd go with a minimum of something like an APC Smart-UPS 750. This unit is designed for data center applications and more mission critical equipment. Ten times better than the RS800 and actually provides real protection. Power filtering, boost/drop, surge protection and run time!

I did get a new smart UPS 1500 for less than 150€ on e-Bay. So I'm all set.
