I have just been looking at HDD's with a thought to get a couple of 2Tb ones for back up purposes.

Is it me, or have HDD prices gone up in price a lot in the past 6 months?

Also, many suppliers have items listed as "Out of Stock" - is there a HDD shortage??

    Hi there,

They have...due to issues in Asia (Japan).

There is a shortage on certain makes/models...which forces prices on others.

Ps - I get updates/communications from PC manufacturers

While the production of hard drives is being resumed in Thailand I would expect to see more failures (I'm hoping I'll be proved wrong) as manufacturers release sub standard drives to make up the shortfall that the flooding has caused. Also Seagate recently announced that they are reducing their warranty to 2 years in line with other manufacturers. Many people are taking this to mean that the manufacturers do not have as much faith in their products as they once did.

To be honest most of the price rises we've seen is not due to the short supply of drives but more the attempts from retailers to boost their profits on their existing stock.
