The latter, due to spinning up and down. During spin up/down access to other drives seems to be blocked. So, if you are timeshifting with the recording HDD spun down, then a recording starts (which causes the recording HDD to spin up)... you might expect to see a pause and/or glitch while timeshifting.
The former - different partitions - is not usually a problem in my experience.
