Circumstances force me to replace a completely dead motherboard. Obviously, this means - amongst other things - that I need to install Windows from new and rebuild everything. Equally obviously, I do not have a nicely prepared backup to use, although the disks with all the previous data on - including the MediaPortal folders - are still OK.

So the question is, once I've installed the new Windows (will be Win 7 as before) and installed MP again (1.10 as before) can I simply replace the new C:/ProgramData/Team MediaPortal folder created by the install with the old one saved on the disks (will be copied off before the disk is reformatted for the install) and get back to where I was?

Fortunately, I had taken a dump of MPTVDB for other reasons so can just replace this.

    Hi.
Best is to copy the "old" data folder over to the new installed C: drive before you are installing MP. Then most (if not all) of your settings are as they were before.

Thanks for that. I had hoped and expected that this would save a lot of time. However, I have to say I'm a bit surprised that you suggest doing this before the install of MP as I had assumed that a fresh install would think that it had to create all the folders it needed as part of the install and would therefore overwrite the "old" ones. Is that a wrong assumption?

It's more like an update then. If there are old data available, MP tries to keep this during installation... I don't know if MP1 is able to "upgrade" to an identical version. If yes it would be best to also copy the program folder over, as most (if not all) of your plugins are installed instantly then. TVSeries and some others with extra StartMenu entries may need a reinstall, but this is something you need to try yourself.
