I am new to media portal and have installed the media portal server and tried to figure it out. Well I realized that I am completely lost and searching the forums is difficult because of a lot of terminology I don't understand. Upon installation I think there were a few steps that may have been skipped but I am not sure. I am not sure where to begin. I was able to set up some skins and added videos and music to some type of data base and was able to utilize the video data base in the program, but I think the biggest problem that I am having is with setting up TV functions with in media portal. I have not a clue about going about this like what to start with first. I guess the first thing is the TV-Server Configuration, when I run the program it asks for a User ID and password which I tried various sets without any success and I am not sure what it does either. I want to learn though what it does. Then in MediaPortal Configuration on the non server version has a lot of configurations like the tv tuner card which MediaPortal was able to recognize and some how i was able to get some channels configured on it, but it wasn't the right channel line up for my area. I am not sure what I did but when I installed the server version all of that went away. So I am not sure what questions to ask accept how can I get the tv functionality out of MediaPortal

Hello - here is a couple of things:

Did you follow the installation guide that is in the wiki on the front page of mediaportal? It is quite good and gives step by step instructions. Now, I would expect that the password is the password you issue to give MP access to the sql database. The installation instructions tell you to select that password and remember it.

Also your post is hard to read, can you please use paragraphs?

Yes, I believe I did follow the wiki on the home page. When I tried installing sql database, I found out that it was already installed on my computer. which skipped that step when assigning a password and when I tried to access it through it asked me for an ID and a password.
My efforts did include password as a password and I left the ID as is.
I am not sure if the MediaPortal installed it or if it was installed in another instance. I am not sure if I would want to uninstall and then reinstall because another program might need it. I am just not sure.

I uninstalled SQL and reinstalled it was able to set a password to open the TV-Server Configuration. Now I am getting an error when I clic yes to MediaPortal TV Service to run the service I get setup tv has stopped working. I must say I am really new to this, But I am diving in.

Hi There,

Ok, If you previously had it installed - you will need the password, because MP needs it to do... just about everything.

Pretty much every different section of mediaportal stores it's settings in different database files somewhere under Program Files/Team Mediaportal.

I'm glad you got past that first problem. If you have errors configuring your TV card - make sure you have the drivers etc installed for the card first.

Also, if MP fails to configure while setting up the card, you don't have to uninstall/reinstall after trying new settings, you can always run the configuration from inside the mediaportal dialogue.
