hi, can I play a movie from its icon? (1 Viewer)

just wondered, probably an obvious answer. but it would be nice to hit a key that plays a DVD movie from the list or icon screen. At the moment I still have to go into the list of its files in order to play it. Hope that makes sense?

Not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but perhaps it is...
I usually rip to ISO, but to perform a test for you I extracted one ISO into a folder called "test" and added "test" to one of my video folders. Inside "test" there are two folders: VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. A standard DVD structure. I then opened MP and navigated into the videos plugin. I found the "test" folder (ie. I highlighed it), pressed "p" (which is the shortcut for play - should work with the "play" button on any remote) and it started to play. I didn't have to go into the VIDEO_TS or AUDIO_TS folder.

Is that what you want?

thank you. I didn't know about the "P" shortcut. I'm a bit stuck now... all our files are directly from the DVD's that we have. so each movie has files in its own folder... i was renaming the .IFO file to the movie's name, so that the IMDB plugin would work...(which it does) but now i find that media portal won't play them when they're like that. looks like i need to do some more homework ? (we have heaps of DVD folders like that, im hoping the answer isn't that I have to convert them to some other format

MP probably looks for the VIDEO_TS.IFO file - I would recommend not to rename it. When I right click on my "test" folder in MP and select "IMDB" it is obviously looking for matches for "test"... so I don't know exactly what you are doing, but I would imagine the IMDB plugin that you're using should work if the parent folder name is named something like the DVD name.

hi again MM, First, thanks for your replies and help! really appreciate it. Its weird, but mine won't do the IMDB thing from the folder. Even though the folders are the names of the movies. It does connect to IMDB and downloads a lot of irrelevant stuff then offers a list of 20 or so movies to select from. The only way i could make IMDB work (so far) was to rename that IFO file and then click on that and select IMDB...which of course meant that Media Player wouldn't play the movie. Maybe I'll do a re-install and see how I get on..

This is what happens for me too. The names of those 20 movies should relate to the folder name. So for example, when I try to get IMDB info for "test" (obviously a fake name) I get:
The Recruit
Dead Ringers
Body Heat
Body Double
Test (2000)
Test (2007)
Test (2005)
Test (1976)
Test (2011)

Don't know why the first 4 are picked up (maybe they have "test" in their description a lot), but obviously the last 5 are attempts to match "test". Is this not what happens for you?
When you select the correct movie from that list, the appropriate info is downloaded. The reason it comes up with a list is that it can't find an exact match.

Maybe I'll do a re-install and see how I get on..

hmmm.... mine suggests the same list of movies regardless of what folder i'm on.... i clicked "manual" on the left instead of chosing one from the list and I see from the screen that pops up that its searching on "VIDEO TS"...that was what lead me to rename that file....

clearly something wrong... yours is searching IMDB based on your folder name...mine seems to be searching based on the first file within the folder....

I'm learning tho... must be a quick solution....

When you start the search, it should come up with a little popup saying "downloading movie list: script IMDB", and then below that should be a line saying the search term (which for me is "test"). Is that what you see... or maybe you see a search term "VIDEO_TS"?

yep, mine says VIDEO TS... so there we have it... dunno why it looks for that in every case. Im now letting it finish that search, then clicking Manual and typing in my movie title, which it then successfully searches for. So i'll get them all done eventually at least

Try this: first play the move for a few seconds (highlight folder, press "p"), then stop it (press "b"), then try the IMDB search and see what it is searching for.
