In case anyone is interested, there is currently a series of polls on people's home theater tech on ars technica. I'm surprised to see that in the client applications poll, MediaPortal is only on 1% at the moment (currently Windows Media Center is leading on 19%, XBMC on 18%, MythTV is on 4%, and a some apps I haven't heard of seem quite popular). More about the demographics of ars technica readers maybe?

i voted as part of the 1 %. i was also surprised at how few votes were for mediaportal. i used mp for many years, it was my favorite of all i tried out. (mythbuntu, xbmc, windows media center, cyberlink powercinema)

I also voted MP. XBMC is definitely more popular than MP, but the results are also somewhat skewed by Ars Technica being very US oriented where it is more difficult to integrate PVR functionality because of the pre-dominance of pay TV.

There is also the segment of the 'market' who don't really have an HTPC in their living room, they just want a nice interface for accessing their torrents and rips on a normal PC, and this is what XBMC is best at IMO.
