I have 2 tuners AirStar HD5000 and an Avermedia MCE A180. I can add both the capture cards to MedaPortal, but when I scan channels I don't see an option for QAM. Both tuners are QAM ready and will tune QAM with their software, but tuning with Mediaportal gets 0 channels because it is trying to tune OTA instead of QAM.

Only TVe3 will support QAM. In general, its really much more of a pain than its worth however.

Its on the front page under quicklinks "Download TV-Server". You have to get a version of the TV engine that matches the version number of the mediaportal client. For example the process would be to install latest stable version 0.2.3.0 then recent SVN and then TV engine that matches recent SVN version. You will also need an SQL server for the tvengine. All of this is explained in this guide:

    TV-Engine 0.3 - MediaPortal Wiki Documentation

[Update] Using SVN and TV3 version 3-14-2008 rev 17930. I am in the middle of a scan right now (using QAM standard) and I've gotten 5 QAM channels so far. Hopefully I actually get picture/audio on some of them. It would be cool if you could get TV3 running so we could do some testing. Be patient when you scan for channels because like I said my scan is only about half-way through and its already taken about 30 minutes.

I don't know if you have tried a recent SVN or not but QAM was actually pretty easy to set up. Scan took a long time (might be fixed with newest SVN I just saw on front page) but after that all I had to do was rename the channels that weren't scrambled to the callsigns in my schedule and everything is working fine now. I have all my locals in HD without having to rely on my crappy antenna I jury-rigged on the roof so I am happy. I tried to do this 6 months ago and ran into a brick wall. Big thank you to all the developers who have advanced this great program so far in the last couple of months.

@web4lackey: If you are still trying to get QAM I can give you a kind of walkthrough now. Your Airstar card might work but I can definitely confirm that the A180 (needs latest drivers) works great with QAM.

I help write TVE3 :D . My local Comcast encrypts the locals and switches things around all of the time. For me, its not "set it and forget it" unfortunately.

I got Tve# installed and the latest SVN. So I was able to tune QAM channels, but it took a very long time. I am working to get the client configured and working with the server now. Thanks to everyone for your help! My Mediaportal TV section does not appear to have the plugin, if I try to install the TVE 0.3, the option to install the Client Plugin is greyed out. Only thing I can do is uninstall/re-install the TV Server. Any ideas what I did wrong or how to fix it?

The TV Server installer just changed from msi to nsis recently so you need to very careful if you tried to install an earlier version and then one of the SVNs from the past couple days on top of it. The old msi version of the tv server and the client plugin both have to be totally uninstalled. Also you must have all of the new requirements for the new TV server version (a couple of patches and updates) or else you are gonna get weird problems. If you have any problem the TV server refer back to the wiki page i linked to a couple of posts up. It also has been updated recently and is very helpful if you have some problems.
