I searched around the web and found out that mediaportal is capable of handling a 3rd party program called "comskip" and so i downloaded it to see how it would go... but i'm afraid i may set it up incorrectly since it has no setup file. it looks like it might be a stand-alone package that doesn't install but rather, runs straight from where it is. Am i correct?

also, how do i know where i should put it? Where do i unzip the stuff to? Anywhere i want? Or does it have to be in the plugin's directory of mediaportal.

Does this even count as a plugin? (do i install it like a plugin? and how are extra plugins normally installed?)

I want to use this, and other plugins besides this (if it counts as one), but i have no experience with plugins or tacking on exernal stuff to mediaportal. still new to mediaportal but i do have it running and set up with the plugins it has already come with.

I have comskip installed in the "C:\Program Files(x86)\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal TV Server\Plugins\ComSkip" folder (running Vista). I think during installation it asks where to install it, so you may need to manually specifiy the path.

Yes. After it has been installed, the TV Server Configuration has comskip listed as a plugin. You can configure a few settings from there (such as where the executable is, when to launch it and extra parameters for customizing it).

Reading the plugin installation instructions is often the first thing to do. After that, ask on the forums here (as you did). :)

    Hope this helps,
    Mike.

    get comskip from here
    Directory Listing of /files/

    extract it to a folder

Place the folder in "program files"

In General Options of MP Config, check "automatically skip commercials... comskip data available"

    Go to TV Server config

    Enable "comskip" plugin

Direct the plugin to the Comskip executable (you just put it in a folder in Program Files)

    Ok so now its installed...

Next, find an .ini for the country you are in. Do this with google or use the Comskip forum to find one. Ad-detection tuning varies country to country.

Then put the ini in the Comskip folder, over-writing the existing one.

I always found setting the plugin in TV Server config to run after the show had finished recording worked better in terms of overall performance. You may need to experiment a little to see what works best on your machine.

Comskip can be a little hit-and-miss (depending on what country you are in), so when testing it, make sure you record a few different channels and shows. It may work better with some than others.
