How do we know we are getting correct colors on video output? (1 Viewer)

Having some difficulty figuring this out. I'm looking at the color on video outputted by my computer using ffmpeg and the same video on my PS3. I use a 1080p LCD display connected to my PC and PS3 trough HDMI, the PC has a GeForce 8800 GTX. The colors look very different, how do I know who (if any) is right? The colors on my PS3 look very bright and makes the video on my PC look almost dull or grayish. The opposite is true when displaying a still picture, then the PS3 looks dull with the exception of the color blue who still looks much brighter. How can I find out if the video color my PC is outputting is correct?

Have you ever tried a calibration DVD ?

I know people have used them for setting up dlp/lcd projectors in homes but never used on a an lcd screen tv.
