Is there a way of removing the 'no data available' text in the EPG and have the slot left as blank?

You could try editing string id 736 in strings_en.xml

    replace
    <String id="736">No data available</String>

    with
    <String id="736"></String>

I'm not sure what implications does that have (perhaps that string is used somewhere else too)..

SilentException, Thanks for the tip. It works, and I've implemented it.

I know the next lines are written by a perfectionist (and as you can see above I can live in a world where perfection is not always key)
    It works, ... kinda.
While browsing the EPG using standard skin, when there is no data available, there is a blank area on the guide.
When browsing further in time, and no data can be shown for a particular channel, the entry is replaced with "no data avaiable". The background is not realy blank. It's a background of a "show", and the data in it reads "no data available".

Using the trick above in file C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\language\strings_en.xml changes the condition to:
While browsing the EPG using standard skin, when there is no data available, there is a blank area on the guide.
When browsing further in time, and no data can be shown for a particular channel, the entry is replaced with "no data avaiable". The background is not realy blank. It's a background of a "show", and the data in it no reads ... nothing. It's still a "show" box.

If there's another way to not show the "no data available" show I would be keen to know.
