With MCE you can install a WebGuide plugin or what i did is just login remotely and then start MCE (and MCE sees this that it is a remote login not a local one) and then i can go through the guide and do the things you do in the guide.

Is there an equivalent plugin/feature for MP?

MP doesn't detect that it is a remote thing for now because it hangs with initializing DirectX (which of course can or will fail for a remote desktop)

Is there a lightweight http server for windows ( IIS is much to big) something like Tomcat or Jetty in the java world. Then a simple web guide plugin should be able to make pretty easy, just hoping that large portions of this file can be reused then:

Thx, the web interface is just what i needed, Thats a very cool plugin.
(stupid me of not thinking about apache... installed on my own laptop...)

Search through EPG can be enhanced a little bit (define the channels where the search should be in)

why isn't this plugin in the plugins and extentions section?

I've actually seen MP work on RDP, but not on VNC. In fact, using UltraVNC, MediaPortal crashes whenever the VNC viewer is closed. (Video stops, audio continues, but UI is unresponsive.) From what I hear, though, there's a setting to fix that, and it's likely another package (Tight or Real, maybe) would work fine.

Still, in terms of accessing MP remotely: neither RDP or VNC are great options, since both are going to encounter bottlenecks in transferring the UI, especially if "remotely" means outside of the local network.

In case it helps, I'd suggest Synergy to remotely control the keyboard/mouse. Synergy is a KM program, instead of KVM like VNC and (kinda) RDP. Of course, this only helps in terms of using a separate computer (like a notebook) to control the HTPC within viewing distance of the display.

I'm using DameWare Mini Remote Control and it even gives back TV signal. It is meant for networks though, so I'm not quite sure if it'll work outside your network.
