Hi,

I don't really get this... I just installed MediaPortal and... is this supposed to let me watch TV on my computer from some online server? Or does this simply locate the multimedia files on my hard-drive and allow me to watch through this MediaPortal interface?

Please guide me. Thanks!

Ahh! That I don't have! Never thought of getting a TV tuner so I can watch TV... Do you know if there are TV tuners for laptops?

Thanks! I'm really new to this... not sure what you meant by "kind of signal."
Anyhow, I'll be looking around our local IT shops to see the kinds of TV tuners they have which are suitable for the country (Singapore) :)

Be very carefull when you choose a TV-Tuner-Card, dont just buy the first one you see... Do your research here on the forums first...otherwise you will be very unhappy with the result.

Based on the internet you have the following TV providers in Singapore.....

    - Free-to-air terrestrial
    - Cable and IPTV Pay-TV Service

So make sure you get a TV-card that supports these...and that your TV-card is supported by MediaPortal...perhaps Spragleknas can give you some input....

I think I will need one that has a coaxial cable input. Spragleknas can you recommend? I also only have a laptop... so maybe a TV Tuner that can be connected to the USB port? (Is there even such a thing)?

Every unit here has a box where we connect a coaxial cable by default. (The thick black cable with a needle-like wire in the middle of it).
I'm not sure who the provider because I never watched TV, I just know we have it because the TV works :) Should I find out?

From what geov states, I take it that you have DVB-T option. I also found that you still are using analogue:
Analogue transmission for television in Singapore and neighbouring countries is 625 lines System B (VHF, channels 2-12) or System G (UHF channels 21-69), with PAL colour.
Singapore TV: Television Stations and Channels

    And DVB-T w/HD in H.264
Singapore is the first market to deliver High Definition TV using DVB-T and H.264 compression. We believe many other broadcasters will use these technologies in the future and ArcSoft is providing the software solutions today."
but cable seems to be a possibility as well --> How to set up Internet, phone, cable TV in Singapore
Is the coax leading to an antenna?
