During installation or upgrading of MP there is a screen that directs one to download the wmp11-windowsxp x86-enu.exe file and, I believe is asking for it to be placed in a particular folder although the wording on this is not clear. When I do this and continue with the install I get a message that says "Operation Failed Not a Windows or DOS Program".

This message makes it feel like the installation has failed and yet I am unable to find any information on this issue in the wiki.

Could someone illuminate just what this means and why, if this is 'normal' that there is not some sort of clarification during the install to allay fears that the installation has failed.

Many thanks, Dave

Hi Dave,

The MP installer searches for Windows Media Player during the installation process. If it does not find WMP it demands the user to install it. Normally, it should be installed from the beginning on Windows 8, 7, XP. On Windows 7 (and perhaps also on the other versions) it can be deactivated and i remebered that i have done that before, which caused the installation problem on my system now.

So you should check if WMP is installed on your Windows at first. If it is not, install the according WMP from the Microsoft website, which the installer told you, or search for it with Windows Update. Although the MP installer asks for WMP11 according to Win XP, you have to install WMP12 for Win 7 or higher.

If you know that WMP is already installed, check out if it is deactivated. To do so open Start -> Windows Control Panel -> Programs -> Windows-Functions aktivate or deactivate -> Media-Functions. There you can activate Windows Media Player. After that you should be able to install Mediaportal.

After the MP installation WMP could be deactivated again, but remember that for the next MP Update. :cautious:

Hope that helps you.

Best regards!

Joutungwu, Thank you for your reply.

I guess what I am asking is, why are the incorrect instructions given during installation if wmp12 is needed on win7? I have kept installing wmp11 for xp on my win7 machine since that is what the instructions indicate. And what is the PATH referred to when this message pops up, again the instructions are not clear.

Every time there is a new version it generally takes me about 24 hours to get everything working again simply because I follow the directions given.

After installation it also cautions about AERO being installed and someone else has indicated that this instruction should also be ignored! What is its purpose?

I wonder if this could be cleaned up a little, it would really be helpful especially for newer users? Is this explained in the wiki somewhere, I am unable to find it?

Thanks again for your very good explanation of what the instruction SHOULD say, I hope these comments can be passed along to someone who tidies these things up.

Dave
