I used media portal before and I want to install this on a new PC.

During the installation it is FORCING me to use wmp
Why?

I do not like windows media player and media portal works just fine with for instance media player classic (all one needs is to adjust some of the key defs).

Also when I start media portal on an existing computer I get this annoying message that wmp is not installed.

Why is all this?

How do I install media portal WITHOUT wmp and get rid of this annoying message?

I might be wrong but my understanding is that WMP is required because Microsoft bundle in general Windows video and audio fixes with upgrades. MP requires the video and audio fixes, not necessarily WMP itself. Again - could be wrong.

Assuming that is true I understand the rationale.
Never had a problem by the way, I use media player classic and foobar and both have their own private codecs.

If tis is the case how do I minimize the impact of WMP?

In my recollection WMP is very intrusive. I remember that it sometimes overrides folder images and mp3 tags without telling which will ruin my audio collection as I have specialized tags, also WMP indexes all media files and eats up computer resources in doing it. Are these issues far in the past or can I disable them? Anyone know what I am talking about?

Another thing I do not like about WMP is that is has no scaling option (zoom) , or perhaps I am wrong and is that feature added?

Yeah, I'm a Winamp guy myself.
With WMP, I always dive into the tools -> options section (right click on the top area - that is off the top of my head so don't quote me) and check *all* preferences so it doesn't think it is default for anything but WM file types and it doesn't steal back the file types from other software. I think that at least prevents the worst of the damage. After that I delete all the shortcuts, or bury them deeply in my start menu where I'll never see them.

Just installed WMP.

It is now indexing about 4 Gig of media and I do not see any option to stop it.

Microsoft does it again.
It is just evil doing things in the background that people did not ask for.
Any way to turn it off?

I think you can manage the list of folders that it looks at. As I recall, you can delete all except one (which might be the default Windows user My Music folder). I keep all my media on separate drives/partitions in my own folder structures for precisely this reason. There may also be an option to turn off monitoring of the folders in that same options "dialog" - you can safely close the original import popup as the import continues in the background.

PS: sorry I'm not more specific. I don't use WMP at all and I'm currently at work where we exclusively run Linux machines.

Well, they did it again, now all my library network links are removed because I removed the libraries from WMP.

OK, that's it, I take the last suggested option, I am going to remove WMP 11 and use media player classic and setup the right key defs.

Can someone help me get rid of this ANNOYING message when I startup media portal saying I need WMP11?

Pretty sure M$ bundled a tv component with WMP11 (used to be supplied in windows itself, they moved it), that was why it became compulsory for it to be installed, there was a discussion on internal forum a couple of years ago when WMP11 was released about this.

Not sure if this still applies to Win7 + WMP12
