I said I've developed software before...I never said I do it for a living or I do it alot.

When I searched for this topic, I didn't get anything along the lines I was thinking. The link infinityloop supplied would have been enough, without the ignorant comments that came with it.

I never meant it to be an "upgrade path" for everyone to use. However, the addition of a "Get the latest patch" for the "official" patches or version updates would be nice as there is a lot of other software out that does that.

And why is it nonsense to believe you can control the PC without a mouse/keyboard??? It was nonsense many years ago to think that you could control your TV from your couch with a wireless remote control. Why not advance MP to that point as well instead of making it "just another" HTPC application for the PC. I think that would set it very far apart and ahead of the others like Sage, BeyondTV, and MCE. It's not inconceivable to control the PC without a mouse/keyboard.

So instead of taking jabs at me by saying "oh, you develop software? you should know blah blah blah", provide something productive and neutral and stop reading things into the text that aren't there. A simple reply something along the lines of "This was brought up with CVS and deemed a bad idea b/c ..." is a lot more constructively neutral than saying I or the idea is "stupid" or "should know better", etc.

Would it be possible to have an option in MediaPortal (via the Settings menu maybe?) to be able to choose to automatically update itself to the latest SVN build out there?

Thats not what i said. You will need a mouse and a keyboard for SVN-snapshots cause new functions normally wont be configurable inside MP during the coding/testing process via remote control.

That would be my fault I suppose since I didn't specify in my posts that I meant it to be specifically for testing, but then again that's why a backup would be made.

but either way, I understand why it'd be a bad idea for the majority of users.

MP used to prompt when a newer version was available, but it was removed a long time ago.

Nowadays, when a new version is released, there are usually such major changes between official release versions (not CVS/SVN) that a removal is mandatory, if not even a clean install.
This is somehting that is best done by a human than an automated process. Each new version usually brings extra settings that need to be considered too.
