That ability doesn't make much sense. The folder dates are the dates that the folders are created, and in some cases it's the date when it's contents last changed. If you restore your files or copy them across somewhere, the dates change. Folder dates are about the most dynamic (meaning they change the most) of any date related to a movie file, and thus the most unreliable. I guess they'd be useful if they never changed. What might be a step better would be the movie file's create date. At least in most cases this date is preserved when a file is moved or restored from backup (whereas the folder date is always the date it was most recently created).

Hmm so no real option of this sort then ??
How do others contain their order of movie by date added if you do a re-install?? (as this is a pain in the rear)

Currently the Date Added sorting is based on the creation time of the file, so I am not sure I understand the behavior you are seeing Nato. If you reimport your database I would not expect to have different sorting data unless the create time of the files themselves changed.

That being said we are planning on adding a few more options on how this functionality behaves in the future.

Nato, Moving Pictures uses the 'Date Created' field. Windows however sorts by the 'Date Modified' field. There is some confusion as generally Windows maintains three dates per file (Created, Accessed & Modified)

What I do is use a program called 'Directory Report' to copy the 'Date Modified' to the 'Date Created' so that they match up.

It is the only option/method so far in MP.

This is not correct. Windows allows you to sort by Date Modified or Date Created. The default field displayed in Windows Explorer is Date Modified, but this is easily changeable. I do not see how this is relevent to the discussion though. The Date Created property is generally the time the file arrived on your system, so in most cases this should be the order in which you ripped your movies.

Well, I was trying to simplify it a tad for Nato. I know you can use many fields within Windows, I was mentioning it like that because it was the default setting and most commonly used by users.

Yes, that is generally correct. However, if you copy a file from one folder to the other .. or from one drive to the other.. then the date of copy is the 'Date Created'

However, the 'Date Modified' is the date it was actually made. Which is strange and doesn't sound right, but, its how Windows seems to do things.

Perhaps I am touching on things not relevant? I was just trying to explain the method MP uses because I went through a bit of work to get mine working how I wanted it and was trying to share it with Nato.

Additional info is always welcome, sorry if I sounded testy.

For what it's worth we do have an issue in our tracker open to rereview the current setup as there does seem to be quite a bit of confusion on date sorting. :( Probably we will get to this in 0.9.
