in server config I have - 192.168.0.3

in database connection I use the MS SQL 2005 with
Hostname: HTPC\SQLEXPRESS
Schema name: MpTvDb

user ID and password set ok - when I test it says connection successful

external player is setup for VLC

Then when I click connect I get a box saying:

31456 - TCP - TVService Remote Control - OK
554 - TCP - RTSP Streaming - OK
1433 - TCP - MS SQL TCP - OK
1434 - UDP - MS SQL UDP - OK

then when I close that box I get the above error :-(

You shouldn't have to set all of that if you are using the built in tv client, you simply add the info for the tv server and the tv server handles everything else..
are you SURE you're not using some sort of old plugin?

Honestly, if you have your TV server setup correctly (which it sounds like you did since you have been watching tv on it)
It should be little more than entering the server address or name.
This is assuming when you installed MP on your laptop, you instructed the installer to install the tv plugin (watch TV as a client)
See below.

First: If you are using the "built in TV-engine" (meaning TVE2), you can't use multiseat - meaning no client-server.

What you need to make sure of is:

Server (which might be your HTPC that was connected to TV):
MP installed, TV-server installed - both must be same version

    Client (laptop)
MP installed, TV-client installed - must be same version as installed on server.

If you are planing on streaming, then do forget TVE2!

ahh, I think there may be some confusion here.

HTPC - server setup with MP and MP TV Server

Laptop - only trying to use MPTVCLient as found here - MP TV Client - MediaPortal Forum

Had this working before as I said. If it's easier I may just install MP AS A client on my laptop and point to the MP TV Server on my HTPC, but this cut down client was great when it worked. No clues from the error message I posted before?

Like I said before, it doesn't seem compatible with the version you are using.
If there is a later version, you might try that instead.

Otherwise, I would try installing MP as a client on your laptop.

Why not try installing media portal as a client?

Very little setup is needed since it uses all settings from your TV server for your cards, channels, and EPG.

If worse comes to worse, all you lost was the time it took to install MP and enter a few settings and give it a shot.
If it doesn't work, you can always uninstall it and go for the other options.

Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you! =)
