iSCSI vs NFS vs SMB (1 Viewer)

I just bought a synology DS1511+. I am going to load it up with some 3tb drives.

I was just wondering, is SMB fast enough to support Live TV? Otherwise, is iSCSI fast enough? I would like all of the recorded TV as well as all of my Movies, Music, and Pictures to be stored on the Synology.

Any advice you could supply would be great. I am going to have a dedicated gigabit ethernet network connecting the media portal server and the Synology, so there will be no other traffic on it. I will also be enabling Jumbo Frames.

I also wanted to add that I will have multiple MP clients. Will the clients be able to access the NAS directly, or will they have to access the content through the server? Obviously TV will have to go through the server, but what about Movies, Music, and Pictures?

You should be fine either way on speed, but I don't use a NAS so not for sure but the speed to access a video file is rather low compared to Gbit speed

For the clients I would access the NAS directly to avoid any problems with going through the server, the drives would have to be mapped to the server and if the mapped drives disconnect for some reason which windows does that sometimes even though there available you wouldn't be able to access it. So to avoid any unneeded problem just have them access the NAS directly.

Live TV shouldn't use SMB at all. It is streamed directly from the server to the clients, without the nas interfering. You can put the timeshift folder on the NAS but I don't think that's useful at all, so I wouldn't do it.

Couldn't Live TV just use iSCSI then? It would appear as local disk.

Also, For tv shows that are scheduled to record, do they record initially to the timeshift butter? Or do the record to a completely separate folder?

Also what happens when I am watching live TV and then hit the record button to record the entire episode? How does that work from a file management perspective?
