Could I volunteer my serial 20x2 Matrix Orbtial as well? Although the MCEDisplay plugin works nicely, it would be nice to have all the functionality of the ExternalDisplay plugin .

If it has a serial or parallel connection and you can point me to the technical documentation about the commandset, then yes. Otherwise it will be difficult...
