I've got a windows XP box running media portal TV server, and a Vista box with media portal client installed on it.

I've set it all up as correctly as I can. TV server has some TV channels set up, and client PC can connect to server (can see the list of TV channels and even the EPG is there from the DVB transmission). The DVB hotfix is installed on the XP box correctly as well.

All seems great, then try and watch a TV channel and it just freezes. No TV picture or error message. No idea how to fix it. Any ideas?

Try disabling epg grabbing from the tuner in TVServer config.

If not still working then collect logs from your start menu mediaportal folder and upload as per my sig.

Well I seem to have got it working. I had another program called DVB web scheduler running on the server box. It was idle, doesnt even use DVB to update the EPG so I thought it wouldn't be a problem. I disabled the services related to DVB web schedular, restarted the server and now can get a TV picture in media portal :D

My TV server uses a 1MHz Via Epia CN10000 board. I can stream some 720p h264 using the Videos submenu within media portal and seems to work perfectly. TV is less smooth. TV server runs at about 15% CPU usage when watching live TV. But spikes and the video stutters a little bit when pausing and unpausing.

I noticed a strange bug. When watching TV fullscreen, CPU usage on the TV server is at 15%. But if I hit Esc and watch TV in a window within media portal, CPU usage on the TV server jumps to 60%.

I would like to get DVB web scheduler running along side media portal if possible. Do you think it will work if I get a 2nd TV tuner? One for each program.

Now it doesnt work at all. Says ports are blocked, please check firewall. Ports are most definatly NOT blocked. Plus I didn't change anything so why would it stop working  any ideas?

Tried disabling the firewall on the TV server... still says ports are blocked, check firewall. Now there is a new problem... the config tool on the client pc no longer works. It just hangs after clicking the OK button even without making and changes to the setup. Such a shame it doesnt work. MP still has a long way to go before it's usable :(

hate to say but this seems to be something else other than MP. the reason the client config freezes is that its trying to connect to the server.
either the firewall on the server is still blocking it or its the client firewall

I really hate to say it since media portal is frree and open source... but with the amount of times it's crashed and with all the problems, it feels more like alpha quality software.

I ment the "MediaPortal Configuration" tool in the start menu. That trys to connect to the server after you hit the OK button? In any case it should time out not crash if the server isn't there.

Plus I tried turning off the firewall on the TV server and it still said ports are blocked, please check firewall. It's a bit too flaky and unreliable for prime time. It's ok for testing and if it's ment to be alpha quality then it shows some promise.
