Media Portal vs TV Server? (1 Viewer)

I am a complete newbie and I am looking at setting up an HTPC.
To begin with i will have my pc directly connected to my computer. Down the road i would like to move it to my server closet and then use something else (a media extender computer?) as a front end on each of my 2 main computers as well as my office computer as a potential font end. Should i go ahead and install Media Portal 2? I guess i don't completely understand what the purpose of TV-Server is? I did some searching and couldn't find general information about TV server. Is there any newbie documentation or FAQs that i could review?

Don't be to concerned with the fact server keeps getting mentioned, althought it is, but as i'm working with a standalone pc, then i like to consider it more as a TV service for my needs, as mediaportal does not have to be running for it to work.
