I am looking at buying a new Dell PC with a 2.8GHz Celeron processor. Other specs ate 128mb PCIe card, 512MB RAM, Compro DVB-T300 and 250GIG SATA2 drive.

Just wondering if it will run OK, or should i fork out the extra and get a Pentium4 D 3GHz?

I will be buying a new LCD TV in the next month or so with my income tax return (hopefully around AUD$1500) and will connect to the TV with DVI. So maybe thinking about HDTV too.

Of course it will run fine on a celeron. What would make you think otherwise?

Only thing to consider is how future proof do you want it to be?

A celeron 2.8Ghz wont handle the newer format 1080p clips I dont think. (My P4 2.8Ghz wont) If you dont play to utilise those formats than Celeron it is.

Nice, it's good to hear that Celeron's will work fine. I just bought a Celeron 325 at 2.53Ghz. I think if needed, I will overclock to 3Ghz.

    hey callifo,
does your p4 2.8ghz not handle 1080i hdtv to well, is that including the software that came with the cards or is that in MP exclusively , as i recently found my old athlon xp 2400 with a ti4200 runs hd on ten very smoothly

Well I dont have a DVB card in my games machine but recorded mpeg2 HD is fine, its just any other format 1080i clip that wont work well. Eg. the QT HD format, I can barely run 720p, 1080p is maybe 5fps @ 100% cpu usage.

Do you know that Ten is 1080i? Thought it would most likely be 720p... Anyway, the actual MP box is only a 1.8ghz 2600+ and that has a very high cpu usage for both 720p and 1080i. 720p is smooth, but 1080i has microstutters on panning scenes.
