I had a system working perfectly, XP with SP3.
Virus and spybot free as checked with 3 applications

After carefully reading all the hardware, software, hotfix and add on requirements & the installation guides I installed MediaPortal exactly as suggested.

My system almost ground to a halt, launching the application caused crashes of other applications. Closing all other applications (except windows) and again launching MediaPortal caused system freezes that nothing could rectify save for flipping off the power.

OK must be my fault right?

I return to the install guides and redo everything from scratch, run windows updates several times, reboot several times, defrag the system & tentatively launch MediaPortal again.

Yet again another system freeze, Windows crashes and shuts down by itself this time, on restarting windows reports vital system files are now missing.
Multiple warnings repeatedly from windows about multiple files missing.
I check the system files referred to in sytem32folder & find that they have "0" data size.

I try to un-install MediaPortal & windows reports that installer package is missing files and cant un-install.

I try a system restore & multiple warnings from windows yet again and system restore will not run.

I try replacing faulty files as reported by windows from a separate identical install on another drive & still cannot un-install MediaPortal or run system restore.

You know what is coming right!

Yep wipe the drive, format & reload the operating system.

Works great now (minus the MediaPortal Bugy Bloatware) !!!

:D I really had nothing better to do for the last two days

It would have been helpful if you had included :

Full system details, including driver information for GPU .

Programs/apps other than OS that are running.

Which version of MP you used.

    MP logs.

There are a multitude of threads where help could have been gleaned and many users/testers/devs who could have helped if that is what you realy wanted.

I have yet to read or hear of another user having similar problems to yours.

MP install isnt touching any of the system files, so most likely something else is corrupting the system.

I know I shouldnt feed the trolls.. but...

If MP were to blame, then surely everyone would have problems? right?

I have MP running 24/7 for weeks on end with no quitting or reboots. It is perfect. And i'm not particualrly a fan of Windows, so when I say I like something, it must be good!!! ;)

Basically, if it doesnt work, dont generalise and blame the app, give us details, let us try and help figure it out!

I always wonder when people get paranoid about virus\spyware, usually means they have suffered from infections which have already done there damage, before they put security into place (there is no such thing as 100% antivirus\spyware application detection).

As tourettes said, MP does not change any system files, so format and reinstall as damage is already done to your OS by something else.

Make sure any other software you have, comes from a trustworthy source and not some dodgy download site, especially if you use a torrent downloader.

Its still a shame that we get comments like "Bloatware" for an excellent product like MediaPortal. Its also a shame that we will probably never get an apology from him, even after 'Irritated' figures out that it was something else he did (like install an incompatible service pack). Enough said....
