I've been running MP 1.2 on my IBM ThinkCentre for years now and love it:)
Thought it was time for an upgrade so loaded XP Pro SP3 fresh with all patches along with .NET 3.5, Visual C++ 2008, and DirectX9c. When I run either MP 1.4 or 1.5, the files all seem to unpack nicely but then boom, I get a Microsoft error report window with nothing else (MediaPortal.DeployTool has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience). If I run the MediaPortal.Deploy.Tool.exe in the Local Settings\Temp\MP folder, I get the same effect. The only information I can find is in the Event Viewer.

The only two possibilities I can think of are:
1. the network card is disabled on the motherboard as it got fired from a lightening strike and I'm running a USB-to-Ethernet adaper
2. I installed the wrong version of .NET (I tried the ones from these two links)

Hope someone can help.
Thanks.

there is at least one file that deploytool cannot find, but expected it to be there. Are there any logs generated?

First off, thanks for your help as I'm totally stuck.
When I run MP 1.5 and then look for log files in the 3 locations below, there are no MP folders created.
If there are other logs I should be looking for, please let me know as I'm somewhat clueless.
I also tried running Dr. Watson but it didn't issue any reports after the MP 1.5 deploy tool stopped.

    Hello and welcome Mt. Fuji

As CLR stands for common language runtime, I suspect you're missing something .NET or VC++ related. For the latest releases you need the x86 (32 bit) versions of the VC++ 2008 and 2010 redistributables... but the deploy tool should install them as part of the process, not crash.

    Thanks mm and Vasilich.

OK, I'm thinking of completely reinstalling all software starting with XP Pro SP3. I can image the drive so it's easy to test various scenarios.
Although there are links on the MP Requirement page, I'd like to download each of the MS packages so I have them to experiment with.
I'm thinking of installing the bare minimum to minimize the risk of reintroducing this problem.

    1. Is there someone who could confirm that the links below are correct?
    2. Should MP install with WMP11 and .NET 3.5 and nothing more - deploy tool will download the rest?
    3. Is there some software I can install to track what's going on for more information?

    Thank you:)

    Got it working:)

Installed MP temporarily running Windows 7 where MP setup launched just fine so knew it wasn't a hardware issue then went back and re-installed XP SP3 along with .NET 3.5 and all updates. This time no EventType clr20r3 error and crash. Below are my notes to myself about this process in case it helps.

    Cheers everyone.
    Highlights
    1. Backup MP downloaded applications cause they will be deleted if you re-run MP setup.
    2. Do not manually install any of the required software as it may already be loaded with your OS or you may grab the wrong app. It's better to let MP download the applications it wants and then make copies.
    3. If installing SQL 2008 Express, remark out the line CPUSOURCE in the MPSQL2008.ini.

MediaPortal InstallationI personally would not install any of the listed required software prior to running MediaPortal setup. If you're missing a key application that prevents MediaPortal setup from running like .NET, you'll get a prompt. Otherwise, the particular variant of the required software depends on the version of Windows you're running including if it's 32 or 64bit, as well as the fact that your version of Windows may already have some applications already installed. As there are many variants of most of these applications, it's best to let MediaPortal download the version it needs. I strongly recommend you backup these application setup programs. To do this, when you run MediaPortal setup, you can select to "Only Download the Required Components". When it's finished and before you re-run MediaPortal setup, copy the files in the MediaPortal "deploy" folder for safe keeping. Important: When you rerun MediaPortal setup, it'll either crash with an error about "Interop.NetFwTypeLib.dll" in Windows 7 or MediaPortal will launch normally in XP. In either case, the MediaPortal Installation folder and all it's contents will be wiped out even after you've successfully downloaded all the required files using MediaPortal. As such, make sure to back up all the downloaded files in the "deploy" folder before running setup for a second time! After you've backed up the downloaded files, rerun MediaPortal setup knowing it'll delete all the downloaded files. In Windows 7, click "Abort" if it crashes and then try again to get it working. When you get setup running again, copy all the required applications back into the "deploy" folder before clicking "Next" and continuing on with the installation - that way MP doesn't have to download them all again. Note: Don't change the names on these files - you must use the names listed in parantheses below.

MediaPortal Download FolderThis is where the required applications are kept that are downloaded by the MediaPortal Deploy Tool.
    Windows 7: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\MediaPortal Installation\deploy
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\Temp\

MediaPortal 1.5 Required ApplicationsBest as I can tell, these are the applications that the MediaPortal Deploy Tool downloads.

DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 XP/Win7 (directx_Jun2010_redist.exe - 95.6Mb) a.k.a. DirectX 9.0c. MediaPortal downloads this file even for operating systems like Windows 7 that already comes with DirectX 11 and XP SP3 that runs DirectX 9.0c. However, it will not install the older version that it downloads. To determine what version of DirectX is on your PC, click Start>Run then type in "dxdiag" without the quotes and hit Enter.

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update XP/Win7 (vcredist2008_x86.exe - 4.27Mb)
I could not find a link to an executable with the name vcredist2008_x86.exe like the one MP downloads. My best guess is for vcredist_x86.exe below as it is nearly the same file size.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26368

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package x86 XP/Win7 (vcredist_x86.exe - 4.83Mb)
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5582
    Windows Media Player 11 for XP 32bit only (wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe - 24.5Mb)
The MediaPortal Deploy Tool prompts the user to download this application manually into the "deploy" folder. Even though MediaPortal requires that you download this file, it will not install the older version on operating systems like Windows 7 that some with Windows Media Player 11.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-media-player-details.aspx

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4 XP 32bit only (SQLEXPR32.exe - 35.9Mb) MediaPortal downloads this even on PCs with Win7 where it can't be installed. Also, if you're going to use MS SQL Express on XP then I'd use the 2005 version and leave the 2008 version for WIn7.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=184

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP2 Express Edition Service Pack 2 Win 7 32bit only (SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe - 87.3 MB)
If you want to use MS SQL Express with Win7, then you must download and install this database application manually. For XP, in order to install SQL 2008 manually, you'll first need to install Windows Installer 4.5 - see below. Important: Make sure to disable the line ;PCUSOURCE="C:\SQLEXPR" in the MPSQL2008.ini file by putting a semi-colon at the beginning or the installation will crash with an error code. MYSQL 5.1 32bit only (mysql-essential-5.1.38-win32.msi - 38.3Mb)
MediaPortal automatically downloads MYSQL as it does not know if you'll be using this database or Microsoft SQL Express. MediaPortal could save time by asking upfront if the user wants MYSQL.

    Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (donetfx35.exe - 231Mb)
This is listed as a requirement for MP 1.5 and lower. Win7 comes with .NET 3.5 SP1, Vista comes with .NET 3.0, and XP does not come with .NET. You must install .NET 3.5 SP1 or MediaPortal setup will prompt you to do so.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Standalone Installer (dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe - 48.1 MB)
This is listed as a requirement for MP 1.6 and higher. Win7 comes with .NET 3.5 SP1, Vista comes with .NET 3.0, and XP does not come with .NET.

    LAV Filters (LAVFilters.mpe1 - 6.62Mb)
Not sure what version MP uses.
    http://www.lavfilters.com/index.php/all-version

    Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable (WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe - 3.2Mb)
Required to install SQL Server Express 2008 on XP. Version 4.5 runs on Vista too. Windows Installer 5.0 comes with Win7. For Win7, you can skip directly to installing SQL 2008 Express.
