Hey!

I'll apologise for what is most likely a very common question on here, but I'm a new(ish) user and my head of IT (my mate) is selfishly on holiday therefore I'm stuck.

Basically my mediaportal.exe file was blank this morning. As I have windows 7, I restored the previous version although now when I open mediaportal it opens the configuration file instead!!

I've looked on forum posts and I can't quite find anything to help.

Ideally something I can copy and paste into the mediaportal.exe file on notepad would be helpful, but if anyone can point me in the right direction and help that would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

    What do you mean blank?

If attempting to activate MediaPortal opens MediaPortal configuration, it generally means you have no MediaPortal configuration file (MediaPortal.xml). You should be able to click OK to create and save a MediaPortal configuration file and close MediaPortal configuration... then trying to open MediaPortal should work.

Very interesting... Thought it was me but....
With all the latest Clean Installs, the first time I start MP1, it always starts MP Config. Once I close it and start MP1 again, it starts.
Maybe something got broke with the restore?

That is absolutely normal, and exactly what I was trying to say. MP has worked that way for donkey's years...

When I mean blank, I mean the mediaportal.exe file was totally empty.
As I said, I restored the previous version, but now when I click to open MP, it opens the configuration file instead!
    I can't see mediaportal.xml file either.

    Update.
I tried re downloading my version of MP which is 1.6. This did not make a difference for some reason and still MP won't open!

I've been looking at version 1.8
If I install this, will all my plugins, tv series, live tv, and moving pictures etc need totally re configuring? Or will version 1.8 recognise that I'm using all of these plugins

I think you're looking @ the wrong file. It's NOT the MediaPortal.exe.config which you can find in C:\Program Files (x86)\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal, but the MediaPortal.xml which you can find in your C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal folder.
This MediaPortal.xml file contains all your settings (as mentioned before) and if you keep a backup of that file, you can always restore your settings.

So to get MP started, check your C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal folder for any MediaPortal.xml or MediaPortal.xml.bak
If you have (1 of) these files in the folder, copy them somewhere else and make sure they're gone. Then start MediaPortal, when the popup comes, click OK, and then MP Config starts. When that happens, click OK to close it (for now) and try to start MP again. If that works, then check if you have a backup of the MediaPortal.xml file. If you've updated your install, you should have a folder named something similar to 'MediaPortal_BACKUP_07-04_7-32' in your C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal folder.

If you've configured MP before, you might find the MediaPortal.xml file in there. If you do find it, copy the XML file to your C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal folder and start MP again (which should then have your settings as configured).
