I have a problem with mediaportal overwriting coverart pictures, when I do a scan to update the musicdatabase.
For example: I have an album "New Jersey" by Bon Jovi.
I aslo have some of the songs from this album as a part of Billboard top 100 2003.
The album is in [Music]-[Bon Jovi]-[New Jersey].
In the New jersey folder I have the coverart as "folder.jpg" and the same picture in [thumbs]-[Music]-[albums], but then as "Bon Jovi-New Jersey.jpg"
Then looking into [Billboard Top 100]-[2003], I see one of the songs from this album showing a picture I don't remember having seen before, but the artist and album tags are correct.
So I check the file in [thumbs]-[music]-[albums], and see this file is that new picture.
I replace that new picture with the correct one, and makes a new scan of my musicfolder. Go back to check and now the wrong picture is there again.
What is going on here?

I don't know how that picture even got in there in the first place, and now I can't get rid of it.

I am running MP 0.2.0.0 with SVN from 04.10.2006.
I haven't posted any logs, because I have no idea which one to post.

Is it possible that the coverart is embedded in the music file?
If that is the case then MP will probably use that as a higher priority than the folder jpg.

Not sure. I think the MPTagReader that was around in the forums for testing would tell you if a file had coverart or not when you scanned it.

Also, I think your thread title is misleading. It seems like MediaPortal isn't overwriting your cover art (implies it is deleting your files) but rather using different cover art than you think it should use.

it looks like that your Billboard chart album has embedded cover art.
if you don't like it replaced during scan, untick the option in the music datbase screen.
you could use a tag editor program like id3-tagit or "The Godfather" to check for cover art in your files and probably remove/replace it

The easiest way to test (though not modify): create a new folder. Copy one of the mp3's we're talking about to that folder and play it in something like windows media player. Then select album art as visualisation.

I took a couple of days figuring this out, I don't let MP write to Tags but use Tag&Rename to get the correct tags and art otherwise I got dual folders in some places as well.

But mediaportal actually is overwriting my files. The one inside the thumbs-music-albums folder (which is the one meant for use by the system) is overwritten.
And the original file is gone. Luckily I am keeping a copy in the local folder and can easily replace it with the original one.

Also I have never had the "Use coverart embeded in mp3's" checked, but I wonder if this might be something with the scrobbling feature, or the fetching of pictures inside now playing?

wartbump: Where did you set those settings?

Thx for all the tips guys.

OK, I think I misunderstood your reply then. When you said you use tag&rename to get the correct tags, I thought you refered to a setting somewhere in mp-setup. But I guess you meant a program by that name?

My tags are correct for the files I've mentioned, and I have realized later that the same picture now is displayed as coverart for the album slippery when wet.
So something weird is going on. Is there anybody else who have seen the same problem?
