AW: MediaPortal TVService on virtualized Windows XP
Wow, wasn't aware that this is already 8 months old....
Michael, the answer to your first question is yes and no. I would say that I'm still studying the feasibility, as I have Amahi running in a VM of it's own, using VWware. Currently I'm in the process of verifiying it, but I haven't put it into prodction. I'll probably wait until they come out with the Fedora 14 based solution, which should be soon.
Regarding then TVServer in it's own VM, I intend to use WMWare as well. A couple of weeks ago I moved to USB TV tuners, and from what I have investigated so far, this should work. Guest OS to run TVServer will be Windows 7, because I consider it stable and also I have a spare license.
Startup and shutdown is indeed a challenge. As of now, Amahi don't have functions for automatic or timed startup/shutdown. Actually I'm developing a tool that shold facilitate this, and the progress is quite ok. However, to finalize this, I first have to move Amahi into production... so I run into a kind of hen and egg problem. Once I have figured out how to do this, my impression is that handling the Windows VM startup/shutdown is doable.
Then, about how I like Amahi as such - it's rock solid, but it need's manual configuration. Nothing spectacular, but you should be able to type some Linux commands. In addition, and that counts for any community project, there may be a risk that this project at some point just dies, which would leave you with an unsupported solution. Comparing wth MediaPortal my impression is that the Amahi community is quite a bit smaller, I guess I have to work with them a little longer to find out how stable the organization is.
Stay tuned....
