Hi people jus wanting to know if anyone can tell me wether mp server only or mp client only will use more ram.
My situation is i am building 2 machines 1 will be a dedicated server with mysql database and the other will be mp gui tv client only and for playing music and movies. Both are XP SP3 tweaked very well using MP V1.0.2. With the memory i have available i can give 1 1GB and the other 1.5GB but not sure wich will benefit from ther extra 512MB.
I think the server because of the database and stuff.

Yes, I know that the SQL server needs memory, but if it was me, I would put the extra ram in the client machine where it will (might?) make a difference to the user experience. I have run a MP-client&server on a 1gb PC a while back without problem. Therefore I am quite sure that the server alone should cope just fine with only 1gb.

Funny have been thinking while setting up server memory consumption seems quite low and only has 512 in at the mo until i strip the other pc to move bits around.

General rule for memory is use sticks in pairs (ideally matched), in your case 2x512mb should work nicely with xp, really do not see any advantage in putting extra stick of memory in.

And of course Vista\Windows 7 both really need at least 2x1gb of memory just to run correctly, with less there is a speed decrease in opening applications

Thanks for your help paranoid but i only have 2x1GB and 1x512MB so to have 1 pc with a matching pair as i always do it would mean leaving 1 pc with just 512MB and unless a tvserver only will run ok with that then ok.

Might be worth trying, obviously the ideal would be get hold of another 512mb stick, ideally for next to nothing from someone who has upgraded memory, if I had one lying around, would send it you, all my old memory units have been passed on to other people

My MP client uses about 1,2 GB of memory and my server uses about 0.6GB

These are just the numbers that showed up in task manager when I was watching TV on my client. There might be some other stuff that makes up for some of the difference, but since the client needs about twice the amount I'd stick it there.
