    Hi,

For the second time in as many months I have had the MFT on my 'Films' HDD become corrupt. I haven't lost anything as I keep a backup of this drive. The drive is a 2Tb Seagate model. It is not making any odd noises, or behaving in a strange manner - it just can't keep hold of its MFT.

I have spent the past 24 hours copying all info from the backup drive. Quite painless really.

Why would this happen, and is there anything I can do to prevent, or recover quickly from this MFT corruption in future?

    Thanks,

    M

I would be concerned about a possible disk failure, which must be going through your mind, first check out the seagate website for a possible firmware fix.

Would be interesting to see if a bad shutdown has corrupted it, see if this works if it happens again Free Partition Recovery Software - Recover Deleted FAT/NTFS/Ext2/Ext3 Partition.

It should rebuild the mft, save copying everything over.

Thanks Ray. I'm beginning to think about poss disk failure. The drive seems to disappear from Windows Explorer whilst files are being re-written to it. Also, I'm not happy about how loud it sometimes sounds when the head is moving about. I know the signs, it happened to me about 6 years ago and that failed completely.

I haven't had this long at all, and most of the time it just shuts itself down when not being used. Must be a duff unit.

I'll check the Seagate website, and if no joy I think I'll try to return it - we have a 12 month warranty under the Sale of Goods Act, or something like that. I'll have a look at Moneysavingexpert as they know the ins and outs of returning stuff that goes t!ts up. I have just checked and I bought this drive on 3rd June this year. It is a Barracuda Green 2Tb, 5900rpm 64Mb drive.

I have just bought a new 2Tb Samsung drive from Amazon for £90 (I'm sure this was £99 yesterday) so I can transfer everything over. I have removed the Seagate one from the HTPC and will put it back to copy files over. There is a firmware upgrade on the Seagate site, but I'll wait until I have copied everything before I try to update the firmware.

    Hi porky

Double check your cables, I had a dodgy sata cable (edge had split when inserted so not as tight as it looked), easily proved any slight movement and my drive came and went from explorer, thank god it was not the system drive, would have been a lot tougher to locate.

Well done Ray! This morning I swapped my "Recordings" HDD for my "possibly failing" Seagate drive. I then started to do a Handbrake recode from the "Recording" HDD and the system locked up after about 5 mins for around 2-3 mins. When Explorer reverted back the "Recordings" HDD had vanished. It is either the cable or the socket on the MB. I will get a replacement cable later today and report back.

The replacement HDD I ordered will come in handy - I told the GF that a new HDD was coming and she said "Does that mean I'll be able to watch my films again?". I tell you, give them ownership, take it off 'em and then you can do what you want so they get it back again... Should I try... " Darling, so you can watch your movies and TV Series again, we need to get a 10Tb File Server and Gigabit LAN throughout the house" ;)

Thanks for the pointer, it would have driven me mad.
